As of January 1, 2010, all businesses that sell food or alcohol in the District of Columbia are required to charge five cents ($0.05) for each disposable paper or plastic bag sold at the register.
Restaurants with seating are only required to charge five cents for disposable plastic bags used to carry out food. If restaurants sell non-food items (such as T-shirts, hats, mugs, etc.) they must charge five cents for both paper and plastic bags used to carry any non-food item. If you suspect that a business is in violation of the law,
please fill out the Bag Tip Line form and provide as much information as you can.
