Green Partners
Looking for further ways to get involved in greening the District? In addition to the many programs and services offered by the District government, Washington, DC is home to a wide range of non-governmental organizations working to protect the natural environment and encourage sustainable practices. The following local groups provide additional resources and opportunities to stay engaged on those issues that impact the District and the greater region.
Carbonfree DC: A grassroots initiative to reduce carbon emissions in the DC Metro area. CarbonfreeDC hosts practical, monthly workshops on topics like energy efficiency, renewable energy, office sustainability practices, recycling and much more.
Casey Trees: Casey Trees is dedicated to restoring and improving the tree canopy of the District. Among the benefits provided by a full tree canopy are reduced stormwater runoff, absorption of air pollutants and greater energy efficiency as a result of increased shade.
Coalition for Smarter Growth: The Coalition for Smarter Growth advocates for responsible and sustainable land use decisions in the greater Washington, DC region. The organization considers issues such as transportation, air and water quality, health and preserving open space.
Cool Capitol Challenge: A regional effort coordinated by businesses, government agencies, non-profit and community organizations, congregations and environmental entities that promotes efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and stop global warming.
DC Appleseed: DC Appleseed works to solve major public policy issues facing the District of Columbia. Recent environmental projects include the Anacostia Waterfront Initiative, restoration of the Anacostia River and evaluating lead levels in District drinking water.
DC Environmental Network: The DC Environmental Network is coordinated by Friends of the Earth and brings together a wide range of local environmental organizations.
DC Greenworks: Provides training, assessments and installations for greenroofs and Low Impact Design elements. DC Greenworks also offers a greenroof subsidy program for buildings located in the District of Columbia.
DC Urban Gardeners: Promotes the creation of community and urban gardens that use sustainable gardening practices. In addition, DC Urban Gardeners focuses on improving fresh food access and community outreach and education. The site includes a listing of District community gardens.
Green DMV: A non-profit organization that assists small and disadvantaged businesses in becoming environmentally friendly.
GreenHome: GreenHome promotes green affordable housing as a way of transforming neighborhoods and ensuring that the benefits of sustainable development reach residents at all income levels. GreenHome is an active partner on the District Green Building Advisory Council.
Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG): The MWCOG is a regional consortium of 21 local governments, plus federal and state representatives. MWCOG focuses on a broad range of issues, but has a department specifically devoted to environmental programs. They are also engaged on other issues that have sustainability implications, such as transportation and regional planning.
Natural Resources Defense Council: National non-profit organization that seeks to protect and preserve the natural environment. NRDC's issues include global warming, wildlife, smart growth, energy, health and natural resources.
Sierra Club, District of Columbia Chapter: This is the local chapter of the Sierra Club, a nationally active organization that promotes conservation and sustainability. The chapter offers volunteer opportunities and a connection to the national Sierra Club organization.
US Green Building Council: Manages the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification program. The USGBC site also provides a listing of all LEED certified and registered projects in the District.
